How to make Radio Hits #MusicBusinessZW

Danny That Guy has put together what we call The Music Business Workshop series which is a informal peer to stakeholders to share knowledge of the industry and how to build an industry in Zimbabwe as you know that we don’t have one . The first workshop was about having a radio hit song, how to have a radio hit song, the requirements and mysteries of radio plays. Radio hits have been an mystery in the country considering that radio is still one of the biggest platforms out here .Artists wonder do they have to pay to be played aka payola or what do I have to do so. Danny had two panels of Radio Presenters, music compliers, artists and producers to share their intricate knowledge and station requirements. Key note speaker was Tonderai Kastande aka Teekay the Big dawg station Manager at Zifm and breakfast radio host he talked about 3 things in his charismatic and persuasive way.

1. Audience
Know that not every radio station is not going to play you and vibe to your music becausewe have a target market we aim at zifm motto we reach the people that matter.
2. Placement
He says my show which is a breakfast show the role is to get people moving so we play songswith an up tempo beat which gives energy more than laidback tracks which can suit the night radio to unwind. Before you approach a radio station you have to know where your
song fit on this station do your homework.

3. Build a relationships with key people
Radio Presenters are people first before they are at work if you approach them as such you will happen to make more strides in your careers than serenade them with discs and emails.Ask for their advice and opinion before releasing music to the public, you have to be ready to accept criticism and implement it.

Then the radio panel convened which consisted of Star Fm, Zifm, Power Fm music compilers so they had something’s to note. Your music has to be clean or have a radio edit of the song it’s not the radio library duty to do a the censoring for your tracks to remove swear words considering we are a conservative country, Your music has to be well mastered and mixed knowing that you’re a fighting
for space with the established local and international acts. Most tracks fail the quality standard test considering these guy have a listening session with all the guys in the room with different expertise said Captain Awesome from Zifm . Butter Phly says we receive so many tracks but we often get backlash from artists after we give them feedback of their music.

My Analysis
We need to start believing in specializations having guys who are paid to master music . We need to approach taste makers for their advice before submitting tracks for radio. You have to hire Mumhanzi Media to do the donkey work for you in radio plugs
